After writing my last post about gmail backup software, I had several people asking me about windows live backup software. Now I won’t go over all the reasons again as to why you want to backup your software. However let me tell you this, I have a friend who recently lost a bunch of his important emails. He didn’t have anything back upped, he thought he didn’t need to, but he actually accidently deleted them himself!! What a doofus. He didn’t notice he deleted these emails before it was too late. The emails couldn’t be recovered anymore. Of course I linked him to my last post about gmail backup software.

I realized that deleting emails yourself accidently is probably the biggest reason for losing important emails. Sometimes you just delete an email thinking it’s no longer useful and later find out it is still an important email and need the information in it. At other times you delete an email thinking it’s a different useless email. And sometimes you just delete an email thinking it’s spam. So there you have it, even more reasons to make a backup of your email database.

Windows live is actually the easiest email client to backup. Just watched this video that I found on youtube for instructions.

If you still don’t understand. Let me explain it in step by step process.

• Step 1: Open your Windows Live Mail
• Step 2: Right click a folder and set the synchronisations settings to all messages
• Step 3: Repeat step 2 for all folders in windows live mail
• Step 4: Resize the window so it’s not full screen
• Step 5: Create a new folder on your computer that functions as your backup folder
• Step 6: Select the emails you want to have a backup for
• Step 7: Drag (holding down the mouse button) the emails into the backup folder you created before in step 5
• Step 8: Actually there is not step 8 you’re done

This is by far the easiest way to create a backup for your windows live mail and easier than creating a backup for any other email client. Because creating a backup is so easy I have even considered switching to windows live mail myself.

Storing all your essential information on gmail without a gmail backup comes with plenty of risks; there have been plenty of accounts of accounts being wiped clean. Usually gmail backup’s system can recover most files, but this isn’t always the case. Or what if you need your essential information just when gmail loses your information. So backup gmail before it’s too late.

There are several ways to get a gmail backup.

Forwarding mail and Hotmail
Hotmail has a feature which can backup your gmail to your hotmail account. All you have to do is create a Hotmail account and go to the Trueswitch options. This takes care of all your current emails, but not future emails.

To take care of future emails you need to set up the hotmail address as forwarding address in your gmail account.
Mail Settings -> Forwarding and POP/IMAP -> Add a forwarding address
The forwarding takes care of future emails. So in case you want to create a backup for a new account or just future emails, this step alone will be enough. Ofcourse you don’t need to use hotmail specifically in that case, you can use any kind of email address including another gmail account.

Backup Services
There are a few paid backup services.
Backupify and BackupMyMail are some of them. All you have to do is select which accounts you want to have backupped. The service will automatically backup all your data. You can browse your archives at any time and restore or dowload files from your backupped data.

Local Email client

• You can get a local email client that downloads all the email from gmail to your computer. Your computer will serve as a backup. Which local email client you will use depends on the operating system you are using. Only Mozilla Thunderbird, which is free, works on all type of operating systems. It is the easiest to use as well. Thunderdbird is developed by the same company that develops the popular browser Firefox.You need to make sure you use the right protocol for you. In case you just want a backup you need to use POP. POP is read only so it doesn’t affect your gmail mail. While IMAP on the other hand can both read and write, so changes you make in Thunderbird will be made in gmail as well.
• If you have Microsoft Office, it comes free with Microsoft Outlook. Therefore it is one of the most used email clients and you might already have some experience using it.
• If you have a Mac, it comes with Apple Mail. I suggest you just use this, because it free and made specifically for the Macintosh operating system.

• Navigate to the iTunes program folder to see how much space will need to create a backup of the program. Unless otherwise specified, access the iTunes folder by clicking the “Start” icon and then clicking “Computer“.
• Depending on how large your library is, further media discs may be required to complete the backup process.
• Find the “C” drive and then “Program Files“. Scroll through the list of programs until you find the iTunes folder.
• Right-click the folder and click “Properties“. Select the “General” tab and find “Size“. The size of the file is listed to the right of “Size“. Write this number down.
• Navigate to the folder where the source music files loaded into iTunes are located. Right-click this folder and click “Properties“. Add the number to the right of “Size” with the size of the iTunes program folder. You must have at least this much free space on any external media you want to store a backup of iTunes on.
• The information that is backed up onto disc is stored as data and not in a format that is compatible with CD and DVD players; this archived data is only useful to restore your library.
• Insert a blank disc (CD/DVD) into your optical drive.
• Go to “Start” and then type “backup” in the “Start Search” field. Click the “Backup and Recovery” option that appears in the Search Results box above the “Start Search” field. The Backup and Recovery program window will appear on the screen. Follow the instructions and wait for the backup process to finish.

Windows 7:
Windows 7 does not come with a standard Mail Service. So you might want to try one of the free Email Clients. I wrote about a great email client in my post about Gmail Backup software.
